Settling In

After five days of endless fields of corn and soybeans, we arrived in the city Friday night. 

We couldn't believe that we had actually driven here. Especially since last time we came on a plane--driving seemed so strange.

It was so hot up there neither of us really wanted to eat much.

On Sunday morning our movers came. They were champs and we were thrilled to have them carry all of our stuff up three flights of stairs. Especially the couch. It was about a centimeter away from not fitting in the door. 

The door had to come off its hinges. The feet on the couch had to come off. The hallway railing had to come up into our bathroom. And even then, they wedged it up and wrangled it in.

Thankfully, we can still have our butter-colored sofa with us today, but the entertainment center was too wide. Rather than taking it up piece by piece, we let them take it back to the warehouse. 

All in all, the damage wasn't too bad. The pioneers came across the plains and many lost their lives. We came across the plains and all we lost was our $60 entertainment center from ksl.com.

After getting tired just looking at all of this, we promptly scooted everything aside and made dinner from some of our food storage. (plus spinach)

It was surprisingly good.

K's first day of work was the next day--he was chipper and ready to hit the ground running (as pictured..).

Friday night was our 6-month anniversary. We went over to the city to watch Jurassic Park on the aircraft carrier Intrepid,  but it was canceled because of impending rain. 

We enjoyed a picnic dinner on the pier and watched the impressive clouds. 

The temperature was nice and the evening pleasant for awhile, then in about thirty seconds it got 20 degrees colder and very windy. 

We ran for it. We made it to the crosswalk before it started raining and had to take refuge in a Subway restaurant, because I swear it was raining from ALL directions. We bought a cookie and played a few rounds of Quiddler before we could make it back to the bus.

Upon returning, we took 6-months-of-marriage self-portraits.

Saturday morning we got up early and drove over to George Washington Park to ride around Central Park. It was really fun, a nice temperature and not too crowded (the entire city kind of sleeps in on Saturdays). We even saw two people we knew!

That afternoon, my mom and dad drove up from Philly. We ventured to Hackensack to go to Costco.

(K found a friend there...)

We had a fun date night with them. We made dinner, played an intense game of Acquire and walked down by the river. 

Here are some of my favorite things about our new apartment:

Three DEEP closets. (Some of the apts we looked at in Manhattan had no closets at all. 

I can't even imagine.)

This shot is looking through our whole apartment, from the bedroom. Kitchen is next to the bedroom, the entryway is after that, then the bikes are in front. 

I love our nice-looking fake fireplace. These two windows look onto the street.

I LOVE all the light we have. We have a lot of windows, but because we're on the third floor, we can leave the shades open and not worry about anyone looking in! The windows in the kitchen really help us wake up in the morning. 

Oh and did I mention the view? (This is a two-minute walk from our place.)
